Petya Nedelcheva, Bulgaria's most successful badminton player, turns a year older on July 30. Standart reports that her name leads a list of notable Bulgarians celebrating birthdays today.
Badminton is a minority sport in Bulgaria, and Nedelcheva built her record largely without the institutional support that surrounds the country's more popular disciplines such as football and wrestling.
Others on the July 30 list
Singer Geri-Nikol also celebrates today, as does chess player Gergana Peycheva, who was part of the Bulgarian squad that won the European team championship title in 2023. Former football international Radostin Kishishev, who played for Charlton Athletic in the English Premier League in the early 2000s, marks his birthday as well. The list also includes football coach Radi Zdravkov, businessman Ivo Ivanov, Maryan Ognyanov, and Yordanka Chobanova, who heads the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria.
Nedelcheva's record
Nedelcheva holds the title of Bulgaria's finest badminton competitor. Standart's decision to note her birthday publicly puts her alongside figures from chess, football, and business. She is the first Bulgarian badminton player to earn that distinction in the country's sporting record.
