Roland Garros semifinalist stops Elizara Yaneva in Rome, she enters world top 185

Bulgaria's top-ranked tennis player, 19-year-old Elizara Yaneva, lost in the quarterfinals of a WTA 125 clay-court tournament in Rome this week, beaten by Italian veteran Martina Trevisan in two hours and four minutes. The result also brings a career-best world ranking, placing Yaneva inside the top 185 for the first time.

A match of two very different halves

According to 24 Chasa, Yaneva took a 3-0 lead before Trevisan leveled at 4-4. The Bulgarian broke again to take the opening set 6-4. In the second set, Yaneva led 2-1 then dropped five straight games. The third set saw her recover from 0-2 to 2-2, but Trevisan won four consecutive games to close out the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Trevisan reached the Roland Garros semifinals in 2022 and was once ranked as high as world number 18, making her a difficult opponent for a teenager still building her WTA record.

Two wins and a career milestone still secured

Before facing Trevisan, Yaneva recorded two wins at the tournament. The more notable was a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Oksana Selekhmeteva, who entered the draw as the top seed and sat at world number 88, 24 Chasa reports.

Yaneva entered the week ranked 196th. The Rome points will push her to a new personal best inside the top 185. She also competes for Bulgaria in the Billie Jean King Cup. WTA 125 events sit just below the main WTA Tour, and players use them to earn the ranking points needed to reach the top tier of professional women's tennis.

Why the diaspora is watching

Bulgarian communities abroad have followed Yaneva since she became the country's top-ranked player earlier this season. At 19, she is prominent in Bulgarian sport at a time when the country's best-known tennis name, Grigor Dimitrov, is having a difficult run on the men's tour. Ranking milestones are shared widely in Bulgarian-language groups from London to Chicago.

The Rome tournament carried a prize fund of 100,000 euros. Yaneva left without the trophy but with a career-best ranking and a quarterfinal result at this level.
